You can generate natural sounding voices for words and sentences on your Anki cards using TTS (text-to-speech) from Microsoft Azure. Here’s how to do that.

Download and install either the the HyperTTS Anki addon or the AwesomeTTS Anki addon.

HyperTTS is the newest addon with more features for automation, but AwesomeTTS works fine as well. For more on the differences between the two addons, see this video. In general, we recommend that you use HyperTTS.

Go to the Azure TTS page and login with your Microsoft account. You’ll have to setup your account and attach a credit (or debit) card (it will be free though as long as you stay within the free tier limits):

After you’ve setup your account, create a resource:

Search for Speech and Create the resource (make sure it’s the Speech service from Microsoft):

Fill out the information on the Create Speech Services page (just the Basics page). Choose the Free Pricing tier, and then select Review + create:

Confirm the information on the summary page, and then create the service.
